What is Common Cold & Flu?
Common cold, true to its name continues to be one of the most common afflictions. According to Ayurveda, common cold and flu indicate the first stage in the breakdown of our bodily defenses.

Common cold and the flu (influenza) are alike in many ways. Both cold and flu can sometimes lead to more serious problems like pneumonia. Cold symptoms are usually a stuffy nose, sore throat, and sneezing. They last a couple of days to a week. Flu symptoms are usually tiredness, fever, headache, and muscle aches and pains. Coughing can be a sign of either a cold or the flu.

Common cold is a contagious illness that can be caused by a number of different types of viruses. Because of the great number of viruses that can cause a cold and because cold viruses evolve, the body never builds up resistance against all of them. For this reason, colds are a frequent and recurring problem. In fact, on average, preschool children have 9 colds a year, those in kindergarten, 12 colds a year; and adolescents and adults, 7 colds per year.

How does Common Cold & Flu spread?
The common cold is spread mostly by hand-to-hand contact. For example, a person with a cold blows or touches his or her nose and then touches someone else who then becomes infected with the virus. Additionally, the cold virus can live on objects such as pens, books, and coffee cups for several hours and can be acquired from such objects. While common sense would suggest that coughing and sneezing spread the common cold, these are actually very poor mechanisms for spreading a cold.

Causes
According to Ayurveda, Colds and Flu are generally Kapha (phlegm) diseases. Exposure to cold air and seasonal changes are Kapha increasing factors. Exposure to hot and cold conditions alternatively in a short period is also responsible, as for example having cold water or drink immediately after coming in from the sun.
